Announcing: 2009-2010 mnartists.org/McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photography Recipients and 2007-2008 Fellowship Exhibition.
mnartists.org is pleased to announce the four artists selected to receive the 2009-10 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers. This year’s fellows are Monica Haller, Paul Shambroom, Carrie Thompson and Lex Thompson, all from the Twin Cities.
Designed to identify and support outstanding mid-career Minnesota artists, the McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photography program provides recipients with $25,000 stipends, public recognition, professional development opportunities, and a fellowship culminating catalog and exhibition. The exhibition component for the 2009-10 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers will be administered and presented by Franklin Art Works. The fellowships are funded by a generous grant from The McKnight Foundation and administered by mnartists.org.
2009-10 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers Fellows include:
Monica Haller’s current work is collaboration with graphic designer Matthew Rezac narrating the story of Iraq war veteran Riley Sharbanno through his personal photographs. Haller has a BA from the College of St. Benedict and a MFA in Visual Studies from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She has received numerous grants, including a Bush Foundation Fellowship and the Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists.
Paul Shambroom’s work explores American power and culture. Shambroom is former McKnight Fellow in 2001, 1995, 1989 and 1985. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Creative Capital Foundation and Bush Foundation. A mid-career survey exhibition of Shambroom’s major projects debuted in 2008 at the Weisman Art Museum and traveled to The Columbus Museum of Art, University Art Museum – California State University, Long Beach and Atlanta Contemporary Art Center.
Carrie Thompson’s work examines aging and family through the decline of small town America. Thompson received a BFA in Photography from the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul and has exhibited in Los Angeles and throughout the Midwest.
Lex Thompson investigates how landscapes evince Manifest Destiny in order to perpetuate religious, political and culturally motivated ideas of progress. Thompson received an MFA in Photography from The San Francisco Art Institute and a MA in Religion from the Yale University Divinity School, Institute of Sacred Music. Thompson has exhibited throughout the country and is a recipient of a State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant.
The fellows were chosen from a field of 117 applicants by a distinguished jury of national photographers and curators. This year’s panel included Charlotte Cotton, Curator and Department Head of Photographs at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Washington D.C. based photographer John Gossage and Christopher Scoates, Director of the Long Beach Art Museum, California State University.
ABOUT THE MCKNIGHT ARTIST FELLOWSHIPS
The McKnight Artist Fellowships were created in 1981 to help artists set aside time for study, reflection, experimentation, and exploration; take advantage of opportunities; and work on new projects. McKnight contributes nearly $1 million per year to individual artists through the 12 fellowship programs. The Foundation delegates management of the fellowships to arts organizations that tailor programs to the unique challenges of different creative disciplines. Interested artists should contact the appropriate administering organization for further information about potential funding:
